Stocking your Kitchen

You’ve got your shoes on.  You’ve got your purse (or “murse” right, guys?).  You finally located the car keys your spouse/roommate/kids/dog/evil cat hid.  It’s time to hit the store and stock-up for your first nutrition challenge.

Now, what?  You braved 75 mph winds to make it into the store and have no crappin’ clue what it is you’ll need.  Good thing you printed this post, right?!  (Hint.  Hint.)

Changing your eating style can be difficult, but having the right things in your kitchen will help you be successful!  Here is a list of what we’ve come to find necessary for ourselves (and a lot of other Zoners would agree), other things we find nice to have, and miscellaneous helpful tidbits.  We just love being helpful.

“Must Have” Appliances & Tools

  • Food Processor
  • Blender
  • Food Chopper (though many food processors work for this…as do knives)
  • Crockpot
  • Cutting board
  • Good Sharp Knives
  • Scrapers (Flat & Spoon)
  • Food Scale
  • Measuring Cups & spoons (at least 2 sets or be prepared to clean them daily!)

Nice Additional Appliances & Tools

  • Nutribullet (if you plan to make smoothies, this puppy – or a blender or something like that – will be your saving grace)
  • Mandolin
  • Traeger Grill (These are expensive, but they’re great.  If you’re in the market for a new grill, research one of these.)
  • KitchenAid Mixer

Refrigerator Must Haves

  • Fresh Fruits & Veggies!!!  A TON of them.
  • Spaghetti Squash (This is a MAJOR Zone staple!!!  …and also qualifies as a “veggie”…)
  • Shredded Rotisserie meat (rotisserie chickens really are a lifesaver)
  • Almond or Coconut Milk
  • String Cheese (LIGHT string cheese…it’s higher in protein)
  • Cottage Cheese
  • Greek Yogurt
  • Salsa
  • Mustard (dijon & regular)
  • Coconut Water

Pantry Must Haves

  • Raw Nuts (cashews, walnuts, almonds, pecans, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc)
  • Chia Seeds
  • Protein Powder (Max Muscle is supposedly the purest, GNC Golden Standard is a great low carb version, some like Muscle Milk as well)
  • Vinegars (Side note: Rocky Mountain Olive Oil Company sells great varieties of flavors and only 3g of C per TBSP for their Balsamic variety.  And they’re “local” in Ft. Collins!)
  • Olive Oil (Side note: Rocky Mountain Olive Oil Company also sells great options!  I LOVE the garlic olive oil.  Works with EVERYTHING!)
  • Spices, Spices, Spices (Basil, Oregano, Curry, Chili Powder, Garlic Salt, Chipotle Chili, Cumin, Parsley, Paprika, Onion Powder, etc)
  • Almond or Coconut Milk
  • Flat Out Breads (Available at WalMart and Safeway)
  • Terra Chips (Sweet Potato, Root Vegetable, etc.)

Freezer Must Haves

  • Meat, meat, meat!!!!  Hamburger, Steaks, Chicken, Pork, Lamb, etc…..
  • Shredded Rotisserie meat
  • Frozen Fruit & Berries (look for packages with NO SUGAR)
  • Frozen Veggies
  • Leftovers from prepared meals!!
  • Baked Goods (I love to have some on hand for those sweet cravings that I may have.  It’s helpful to make double batches of Zone Brownies and freeze them to keep)
  • Sweet Potato Waffle fries (You can make sooo many things with these!  Available at the Co-op.)

Baking Supply Must Haves

  • Almond Flour
  • Coconut Flour
  • Coconut Oil
  • Grapeseed Oil
  • Olive Oil
  • Sea Salt
  • Vanilla
  • Baking Powder & Baking Soda
  • Silicon Muffin Tins
  • Cookie Sheets
  • Parchment Paper
  • Ziploc Baggies (for freezer storage!)
  • Paleo Chocolate chips & Dark chocolate bars (the Safeway Select 70% are a great buy)
  • Unsweetened Coconut Flakes & shredded
  • Dried unsweetened Cherries (great for salads & baking and makes a great replacement for sweetened cranberries)

Overwhelmed?  Understandable.  This is A LOT of stuff and by no means is it an authoritative list of what you need for zoning.  We simply hoped to provide you a sneak peek of what our pantries, refrigerators, and freezers look like (though we’re really not kidding about the measuring cups).
